EDUCATION IN LIBYA

EDUCATION IN LIBYA

The University of Libya was founded in Benghazi in 1955, with a branch in Tripoli. In 1973 the two campuses became the universities of Benghazi and Tripoli, respectively, and in 1976 they were renamed Gar Yunis University and Al Fatah University, respectively. In 1981 a technical university specializing in engineering and petroleum opened at Marsa al Burayqah. Enrollments were projected at 1,700 students. In addition, there were technical institutes at Birak, Hun, and Bani Walid. By the early 1980s, schools of nuclear and electronic engineering and of pharmacy had been established at Al Fatah University, while plans called for the construction of an agricultural school at Al Bayda for 1,500 students.

EDUCATION IN JAMAICA

EDUCATION IN JAMAICA

Generally, A-Level or CAPE examinations are required to enter the nation's Universities. One may also qualify after having earned A 3-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary college. The word college usually denotes institutions which do not grant at least a bachelor's degree. Universities are typically the only degree granting institutions; however, many colleges have been creating joint programs with universities, and thus are able to offer some students more than a college diploma. A few universities in the United States have extension programs in various parts of Jamaica. Most of the students who enroll in these part-time programs are working professionals who want to continue their education without having to relocate closer to the nation's Universities.

    EDUCATION IN ISRAEL

    EDUCATION IN ISRAEL

There are internal challenges to Israel’s existence nearly as pressing as the external ones. The tension and gulf between the secular and the religious is one of them. At least in a democracy the issue is out in the open, but the ill feeling that exists between the two camps is palpable. One of the battlegrounds is Education.

Education is at the very core of our tradition. It is emphasized in the Shema, the most familiar component of our liturgy. I believe most strongly in both secular and religious education. The secular involves two elements.  One element consists of ideas and evaluation, that any idea can be challenged fairly and honestly. This is essential to create a thinking person, someone who is not brain dead. The other element is the acquisition of the tools to earn a living, which is essential for providing a practical insight into life. Sometimes you can manage one without the other, but in general if one element is missing, a person is in danger of being lame.

      Government Scholarships

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships are federally funded scholastic awards that are designed to encourage studies abroad in non-traditional countries, such as Israel and other areas of the Middle East. While the area remains on the U.S. government’s Travel Warning list, students may reap big scholarship dollars for their risk. Eligible applicants are chosen based on a host of criteria including academic record and financial need. In fact qualified students must be receiving Pell Grants to be considered. Preference is given to those students of minority background with the end result being a more diversified leadership in global economics and business. Up to two years of scholarships may be available to recipients. Awards are up to $5,000.

    EDUCATION IN HONG KONG

    EDUCATION IN HONG KONG

Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997; as a result, its education system follows a British pattern. There is a three-year kindergarten education followed by six-year primary education, three-year junior secondary education, two-year senior secondary education and a two-year matriculation course leading to the Advanced Level examinations. There are tertiary institutions offering bachelor's degree, higher diploma and associate degree courses.
Since the 1970s, a policy of nine-year free and compulsory education has been launched in Hong Kong. It includes six years of primary education and first three years of secondary education.
Primary education in Hong Kong covers a wide curriculum. It basically includes Chinese, English, mathematics, social studies, science, health education, music, physical education, and art and craft. The teaching medium in most of the schools is Chinese with English as a second language. Junior secondary education is an all-rounded general education. Students will stream in either art, science or business study in secondary four. The teaching medium in individual secondary school bases on its own policy. Tertiary education is one of the core parts in education system in Hong Kong. The number of tertiary education graduates was proposed to be increased to 60% of the whole population in 2010. Therefore the numbers of degree programmes, associate degree programmes and higher diploma programmes will be increased in the coming years.
There is central allocation of places in junior secondary schools based on academic assessment in primary school. Since the Academic Aptitude Test was canceled in 2000, children's progress in Chinese, English, and mathematics is evaluated yearly with standardized Hong Kong Attainment Tests, while most of the students can enter the senior secondary school according to their internal school performance. After finishing secondary five, students will participate in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE). They will normally take part in three core subjects of English, Chinese, and mathematics. Upon completion of secondary seven, students will sit for the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE). The AS-Level Use of English and Chinese Language and Culture examinations are usually taken. The admission to the tertiary institutions will base on the result of HKALE under the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS).

    EDUCATION IN UGANDA

    EDUCATION IN UGANDA
Uganda is a land-locked nation that straddles the equator. It shares a northern border with the Sudan, to its east it borders Kenya, to its south it borders both Tanzania and Rwanda, and to its west it borders the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Slightly smaller than Oregon, Uganda covers 91,076 square miles in area. Its capital, Kampala, has 954,000 residents. Other major cities include Jinja, Mbale, Masaka, Gulu, Soroti, and Mbarara. Uganda's population is 21,000,000 people and it is growing at a rate of 2.14 percent (Ramsey 1999), which represents a dramatic decline from the 4.6 percent growth rate that was normal during the 1960s. Tutsi refugees fleeing genocide in Rwanda partly accounted for the high growth rates of the 1960s. Uganda provides homes for hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Sudan, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Almost 87 percent of Ugandans are rural residents, while 13 percent are urban dwellers. During the 1990s, reverse migration of Tutsis from Uganda to their tragic homeland, Rwanda, caused growth rates to slow, as did the return home of many members of other ethnic groups to the Sudan and elsewhere. Diseases, such as AIDS, also dramatically cut population growth rates.

    EDUCATION IN GREENLAND

     EDUCATION IN GREENLAND
Greenland is the world's largest island, 2,175,600 square kilometres in area, of which 1,833,900 sq km is locked into the glacial icecap. The land is characterized by deeply indented fjords and high mountains. The length of the longest fjord is fully 400 kilometres, and the highest mountain rises 3,733 metres. Some of the fjords have active glaciers which produce the largest icebergs in the northern hemisphere. The coastal waters and the non-glaciated land support a variety of fish, sea mammals, birds and mammals.
Greenland's present population is believed to have originated with the Inuit of Northern Alaska, who migrated to Greenland approximately 1,000 years ago. The land had previously been populated by various North American cultures and by Vikings from Iceland but, presumably owing to climatic changes, it has been the present Inuit population who have survived. There are also approximately 10,000 Danish residents in the country.
The population is now about 56,000 of which 14,000 reside in the capital city, Nuuk. The principal occupations are fishing and the hunting of birds and sea mammals. In South Greenland there is a modest amount of farming concentrating on the raising of sheep supplemented by some fishing. New occupational activities centre around tourism, which is gaining a foothold in some places.

    EDUCATION IN FINLAND

    EDUCATION IN FINLAND
Educational practices of Finnish-language and Swedish-language schools at all levels are described in this volume. Administration of education is discussed, all levels except higher education being under the jurisdiction of the National Board of Schools which reports to the Ministry of Education, and professional education being governed by several ministries. Pre-school education which is voluntary and financed by municipalities, industrial enterprises, associations, and private individuals are briefly reported upon. Primary, secondary, and higher education are explained in some detail including information on educational history, administration, reform, the school year, school districts, statistics, class sizes, social benefits and questions, subjects taught, teaching methods, the marking system, examinations and diplomas, and categories of schools. Additional sections are provided on popular education -- namely a post school education of cultural activity -- and on professional, vocational, and technical institutions. Three supplements are presented on school statistics, the school reform in Finland, and educational policy, planning, finance, and research.

    EDUCATION IN CUBA

    EDUCATION IN CUBA
Education in Cuba has been another major accomplishment of the Revolution.  Before it, education was unavailable to over half of Cuban children.
In 1960, the revolutionary government began a war on illiteracy.  Where nearly a quarter of the population hadn't been able to read before, the campaign ended with an illiteracy rate of 3%.
Nowadays compulsory education through the ninth grade exists in Cuba.  From there, students can choose what they want to do next.
Cuban students have always been enthusiastic about their education.  The effects of the Special Period and tourism are having some negative effect on this.
Some students choose to go to a per-collegiate school, technical school, or none at all.  If they graduate from the college preparatory school, they can attend college for free if they choose.
Around 7% of the population has graduated from college and 4% have degrees.  In addition, there are 1.3 million graduates of technical schools in Cuba.
